Digital maturity isn't a binary state — you aren't either digital or not. It's a continuum. And to progress, you first need to know where you are.
Why assess your digital maturity?
Without a clear view of your maturity, you risk:
- Investing in the wrong solutions — buying a sophisticated CRM when you actually need to structure your data first
- Creating tech chaos — adding tools without integrating them
- Frustrating your teams — asking them to use systems they don't understand
The 5-step framework
Step 1: Assess your data maturity
Ask yourself: - Where is your data? - Is it structured? - Who has access? - Is it up to date?
Step 2: Map your processes
Document how the work actually happens — not how you think it happens.
Step 3: Analyze your tech stack
List every tool you use. Identify redundancies and gaps.
Step 4: Evaluate your team's skills
Are your teams trained on the tools they use?
Step 5: Build your roadmap
Based on the previous steps, define your priorities.
The three maturity levels
Level 1: Chaotic — No documented processes, scattered data, badly integrated tools.
Level 2: Structured — Documented processes, centralized data, integrated tools.
Level 3: Optimized — Automation, artificial intelligence, continuous improvement.
Most SMEs are at level 1 or 2. And that's normal. What matters is to progress intentionally.
